At Infinitive Health in Cannington and Kwinana we endeavour to provide information to our patients to help them better understand how their body works and why it is that sometimes it can go awry.
Hormones are chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the body. After being made in one part of the body, they travel to other parts of the body where they help control how the cells and organs do their work. For example, insulin is a hormone that’s made by the beta cells in the pancreas and balances blood sugars.
When thinking about hormones, most will automatically consider sex hormones. Our sex hormones are only a small part of the whole picture but have such a life effect if they are not working well.
Four characteristic hormonal patterns that are most typically the key symptoms may occur in isolation or in combination:
- Mood disturbances and pain, may present as PMS symptoms including breast tenderness and fluid retention (low progesterone)
- Inflammation and tissue growth, pelvic congestion (high oestrogen)
- Amenorrhoea/oligomenorrhea, hirsutism, and/or acne, may present as PCOS symptoms (high testosterone)
- Typically presenting in mid-life as menopausal symptoms (low oestrogen)
If you, or someone you know experiences hormonal disturbances please speak with your healthcare professional – at Infinitive Health our chiropractors, podiatrist, skin therapist, naturopath, nutritionist, remedial massage therapist or exercise physiologist are here to assist in any way possible.
