What is massage therapy?
Massage is defined as the systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for beneficial healing effects: physical and psychological changes for general wellbeing.
The system of massage treatment involves the therapist using their hands to apply pressure using various techniques on the body: stroking and gliding, kneading the soft tissues, or what is termed ‘percussion’.
Massage therapy is beneficial to people leading busy lifestyles suffering from what is now commonly encountered work related stress. Massage assists with mental relaxation as well as working on physical symptoms of the back and neck associated with sitting for an extended period of time at a desk or from physical labour.
Peer-reviewed medical research has shown that the benefits of massage include pain relief, reduced anxiety and depression, and temporarily reduced blood pressure and heart rate.
